In general IR systems such as web search engines work entirely with human-language, but I'm very interested in other types of data search. For example it is incredible how Shazam manage to retrieve right song (at least 99% match in my practice) by comparing bit pattern recorded through microphone, including all extra noises, with database of millions of songs. And it does it in a matter of seconds. It is unclear for me what kind of computation happens behind the scene.
