Some professional still use boolean retrieval, because they think that they can get better search results, but it is only true if you created perfect boolean query, if it is just a bit wrong you might not get any relevant results at all. I think that you can run several free text queries during the time you can spend on refining you boolean query, and get even more relevant information. It is interesting if there were any studies conducted to compare these to models by searching for the same data side by side.
